Spatial Optimized Designs: from cities to natural systems

Wednesday 13 et Thursday 14 Décember- ENS-Lyon

Site Monod, Salle Condorcet

Sponsor: CNRS Mission pour l’Interdisciplinarité-Appel d’offre OASIC 2017-2018

We are having a hard time to put together bikers, walkers, drivers and various networks (water, fiber, gas, etc.) in a reduced and geometrically constraint urban space. On the other hand, natural systems, such as proteins, support densities of entities (atoms, amino acids) as large as the highest city densities in the world, in a nano confined space. Proteins master this complexicity: high efficiency and high functional performances, robustness and adaptability to perturbations.

Some solutions adopted by natural systems to optimize their space for a high functional performance will be presented.

The emergence and the current situation of urban space will be presented as well as the future challenges for improving city organisation.

At last, from the infinitely small to the urban space, we will discuss whether it is worth comparing natural and urban space designs to better understand them.
